A Few Pet Nutrition Facts

We’re reading about nutrition in my small animal medicine class.  A few interesting facts:

  • Vitamin K is provided to dogs and cats by intestinal bacteria.
  • Egg protein is 100% utilized by dogs and cats.  All other proteins are compared to eggs.
  • Dogs can synthesize their own arachidonic acid from linoleic acid and therefore do not need arachidonic acid supplementation in their food.  Cats cannot synthesize it and therefore do need supplementation.
  • Improperly utilized protein can cause the pet’s waste to have an offensive odor (my note: as opposed to the rosy smell it usually has?).

That’s all for now.  I’m off to take my long-nosed dog outside and then to get some sleep before work tomorrow.
